Beautiful miniature Wellington chest table top specimen cabinet in pine with an original label for W.E. Dawes, Bird & Animal Preserver, Plumassier (love that description), &c., whom were situated at 9 High Street, Denmark Hill, Camberwell.; also, proudly announced on the label, “And at the Crystal Palace”! Preserving all kinds of Birds and animals was a Victorian obsession and many beautiful pieces of furniture were made to house the collections. This cabinet is a classic and rare example being modelled on the Wellington Chest which has hinged side pieces, one of which is lockable to secure your collection of specimen.
This miniature table top chest 33 cm wide x 24 cm deep and stands 38 cm high.
It has five specimen drawers which have the drawer bottoms lined with cork to facilitate the holding of specimen such as Butterflies, Moths, Beetles or other insects when fixing with pins.
The full depth of each drawer is 38 mm. but each drawer has a groove to accept a glass cover which leaves 30 mm depth within the drawer.
Ideal for most insects and small birds eggs, which is the type of thing the cabinet was probably designed for. The top drawer has the original paper label of the supplier W.E. Dawes.
