Times like these I wish I spoke Japanese...

A delightful signed 19th century Japanese lacquer display shelf with cupboards and recessed drawers.

Imagine our delight when upon opening we found some totally enchanting family memorabilia and correspondence from the Japanese Embassy in Delhi who we believe may once have been the previous owners of this piece. Who knows what the wonderful pages contain, they certainly could be as mundane as shopping lists or accounts, notes to home perhaps or even treasured love letters - the silk purse within the velvet roll was obviously much treasured💕

The shelves are far from perfect with dinks, splits and losses to the mother of pearl but still a rare and lively piece indeed.

As a bit of a Sunday Supplement would be marvellous to see the photographs returned to the family - Somebody may recognise the rather grand officer in his formals 🌹

After four weeks of playing studio assistant to Cara it's now back to the day job....

So here, an absolutely wonderful large North Italian Alto Adige Cypress and Cedar Wood Pen and Poker-Work Cassone Early 17th Century.

When every panel tells a story.

A glorious new arrival - At Griffin Mill this week 🌹

Intaglio carving is a feature of furniture of the northern Italian Alpine region that was popular in the 16th and early 17th centuries, traditionally associated with the area around the Adige River. The technique of flat, incised decoration with inked scenes against a cut away, punched background, often depicted Biblical, literary, and historical scenes accompanied by animals and mythical beasts. Pieces were typically made of cedar or cypress due to their relative softness for ease of carving, but also for their warm colour and scent, which was a deterrent to moth and worm damage. Chests and boxes made of cypress and cedar were useful for storing valuable textiles, and period inventories throughout Europe record them, indicating that they were desirable objects and traded far outside their region of origin.

Wonderfully Modelled by Cara is this set of truly fabulous 19th century Country House hand turned quality mahogany curtain rings and finials.

With each ring measuring 17cm diameter they were obviously designed for some seriously extravagant curtainage.

Far from perfect but perfectly enchanting this gro

Far from perfect but perfectly enchanting this group of 18th and 19th century mirrors with all original Mercury glass came from the same French home where they had hung most likely from the time they were made.

I didn't have my camera with me that day so was unable to photograph their outlines which were left on the walls when they were taken down - which was a real shame because sometimes our stories are not about where we are going - but the impressions we leave behind...
