18th Irish and a journey of survival. This rather humble cottage pine dresser on closer inspection retains traces of many, many layers of paint. Signs of old worm scatter it’s worn, eroded surfaces. The stile foot to one side so crumbled stands just a fraction of its original size so that without a wedge it’s once proud frame lists to the left. At some point in its history this diminutive dresser has been tanked in caustic (the cruellest of all 1980s trends) to remove both the paint (and we assume the many/any old friends).. The original backboards are hanging in there despite some losses to the base of several planks and then the final ignominy for this old soldier was being dragged to a large bomb fire and rescued just before the first match was struck. Despite all, it wears its failings well – this near 300 year old hand carved love token and primitive piece of Folk Art is warm, rustic, enchanting and tactile. Yes it’s life now may well be reduced to that of a prop or shop display but it is still oh so worthy – green – and really rather lovely
