Alex Portner (1920-1982)
Born in Berlin, Germany of Polish-Russian parents, Portner studied art in Amsterdam, Paris and Berlin before serving in the British army during World War II. After the war he began to exhibit extensively, mixed shows including the RA, Wildenstein’s and the ROI, as well as one-man exhibitions at the Walton Gallery, New Art Gallery, Madden Gallery and in South Africa and America. St John’s College, Oxford, and private collections in Britain and America hold his work.
